Packing Up Someone Else’s Life
You never know what to expect when you step through the doors of someone’s home. From minimalists to hoarders and everything in-between.
We help pack up people’s lives and sort through their belongings that they’ve spent a lifetime acquiring. Some items purchased on a whim, others deeply emotional inheritances full of memories. Each one a unique piece of the person leaving it behind. It’s like a puzzle and each item is a piece belonging to the bigger picture of a life well lived.
Ideally, we prefer it when the family and close friends have had a chance to go through their belongings to claim any items of sentimental value. But we sometimes encounter scenarios where someone has lived in one place all of their adult life, and now has to leave because of the onset of dementia, failing health or death of their spouse. They are reluctant to part with anything because they have already lost so much. Those places are often overflowing with memories, every surface cluttered with items untouched for years. Photos all over the walls, papers piled on desks and tables, and cabinets full of dinnerware for special occasions only.
Even with relatives present to assist, these situations can get emotional. It can take hours to pack up a box of coffee cups for donation because each one has a story of where it came from. There are moments of anger, frustration and confusion as we pack a simple box with a basic set of dishes and cutlery to take to their new home, leaving behind a lifetime’s accumulation of cooking supplies. It’s hard for someone to picture their new life where they won’t need these items.
These parents and grandparents have lived through times of scarcity and often can’t bring themselves to throw anything out. It has to be kept, just in case. These situations are extremely difficult for everyone involved. We always strive to provide compassionate support as we work our way through a lifetime of “stuff” to ensure everything finds it’s rightful place.
